Procedure
2M-Sodium hydroxide solution (0.7 ml) was added to a stirred suspension of Intermediate 38 (0.23 g) in ethanol (5 ml) and water (1.5 ml). After stirring overnight at room temperature, a further quantity of 2M-sodium hydroxide solution (0.7 ml) was added, and the reaction mixture was heated at 43° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction solution was concentrated, diluted with water (5 ml) and acidified with 2M-hydrochloric acid. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to give Intermediate 39 as a white solid (0.14 g). LCMS showed MH+=305; TRET=2.42 min.
