Procedure

Combine 6-(4-Cyano-phenoxy)-3,4-dihydro-1H-isoquinoline-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (1.93, 5.51 mmol), t-butyl alcohol (50 ml), and KOH (1.56 g, 27.6 mmol). After the reaction stirs for 72 hours at room temperature, concentrate under reduced pressure then add ethyl acetate. Wash the ethyl acetate with a brine solution and dry the organic layer over Na2SO4. After concentrating the organic layer under reduced pressure, the reaction affords 1.93 g, 2.50 mmol (95% yield) of the title compound as a white solid: 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3); 1.5 (9H, s), 2.75-2.85 (2H, m), 3.6-3.7 (2H, m), 4.5 (2H, s), 6.8-6.9 (2H, m), 6.9-7.0 (2H, m), 7.1-7.2 (1H, m), 7.7-7.9 (2H, m); TLC Rf=0.5 2:1 Hexanes:Ethyl acetate.
