To a solution of the above prepared 2-(1-hydroxy-2-methyl-propyl)-5-methoxy-4-methyl-phenol (2.45 g, 11.65 mmol) in 22 mL acetonitrile were successively added Cs2CO3 (4.56 g, 1.2 eq.) and ethyl bromoacetate (1.35 mL, 1.05 eq.) and the mixture vigorously stirred at ambient temperature for 3 h. Pouring onto crashed ice/NH4Cl, twofold extraction with AcOEt, washing with water and brine, drying over magnesium sulfate, and evaporation of the solvents, followed by flash chromatography (SiO2, hexane/AcOEt=8/2), gave 3.34 g of the title compound as colorless oil.
