Reaction Steps

To a solution of 20.30 g (48.27 mmol) tert. butyl 4-(3,4-diethyl-phenyl)-3,3-bis-ethoxycarbonyl-butyrate (Intermediate product 61) in 100 mL CH2Cl2 was added 40 mL TFA while cooling with ice and the mixture was refluxed for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was evaporated down i. vac., the residue was combined with water and the aqueous phase exhaustively extracted with EtOAc. The combined org. extracts were washed with sat. aqueous NaCl solution, dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated i. vac.
