N-(3,5-dichlorobenzenesulfonyl)-(L)-proline, methyl ester from Step A was dissolved in ethanol (50 mL) and treated with 0.2N sodium hydroxide (26.6 mL) for 1.5 h at rt. The mixture was acidified with glacial HOAc, concentrated by rotoevaporation, and the residue dissolved in CH2Cl2, washed with water, saturated brine solution, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and evaporated to give the title compound; yield 1.4 g.
