Reaction Steps

To a slurry of 60% NaH (1.46 g, 61.1 mmol) in THF at 0° C. was added 10.0 g (56.4 mmol) of ethyl(cyanomethyl) phosphate. A solution of 9.88 g (47.0 mmol) of 3,4,5-trimethoxyacetophenone in THF was added precipitating a yellow solid. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes, quenched with water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extract was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and evaporated in vacuo to afford 9.32 g (85%) of 16 as a yellow oil.
