Procedure

To a cooled (0° C.) solution of ethyl 6-acetyl-1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylate (2.0 g, 8.06 mmol) in THF/EtOH (20/20 mL) was added sodium borohydride (308 mg, 8.14 mmol) portionwise. After 2 h, the reaction was quenched with sat. NH4Cl. The resulting mixture diluted with EtOAc (40 mL), washed with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The resultant residue (2.1 g) was used without further purification. MS (EI): cal'd 251 (MH+), exp 251 (MH+).
