Reaction Steps

To a mixture of 1-(3-bromo-5-fluoro-2-hydroxy-4-methylphenyl)ethanone (0.3 g, 1 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.43 g, 3.1 mmol) was added N,N-dimethylformamide (1 mL) and methyl iodide (0.17 mL, 2.7 mmol) with stirring. The resulting mixture was then heated at 60° C. for 1 hour. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated to dryness. The isolated residue was purified on silica gel, eluting with ethyl acetate/hexanes (0 to 20%) to yield 1-(3-Bromo-5-fluoro-2-methoxy-4-methylphenyl)ethanone (0.24 g, 80%). LCMS calculated for C10H11BrFO2 (M+H)+: m/z=261.0, 263.0. Found: 260.9, 262.9. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.35 (m, 1H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 2.61 (s, 3H), 2.39 (s, 3H).
