PROCEDURE

According to a method described in WO2007/000590, a microcrystalline silver (III)/chlorhexidine complex was prepared. 0.49 mmol of chlorhexidine (1,1′-hexamethylenebis[5-p-chlorphenyl]biguanide) (0.25 g) was dissolved in 25 ml warm methanol and stirred to prepare a chlorhexidine solution. To the chlorhexidine solution was added drop wise an aqueous solution (1.25 ml) containing 0.05 mmol of silver nitrate (0.085 g). To the reaction mixture of silver (I) and chlorhexidine was added drop wise an aqueous solution (1.25 ml) containing 0.99 mmol of sodium persulphate (0.235 g) as oxidizing agent. After the addition of an oxidizing agent, the reaction mixture was warmed until an orange-brown is fully developed. The precipitate was filtered under vacuum and washed three times with warm methanol to yield a microcrystalline silver (III)/chlorhexidine complex.
