A mixture of 3-bromo-4-(3-bromophenyl)butan-2-one (1.8 g, 5.9 mmol) and ethyl 2-amino-2-thioxoacetate (745 mg, 5.6 mmol) in EtOH (20 mL) was refluxed overnight. The solvent was removed and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (EtOAc:Petroleum ether=1:5) to afford ethyl 5-(3-bromobenzyl)-4-methylthiazole-2-carboxylate as a light yellow solid (800 mg, 42.1%). MS (ES+) C14H14BrNO2S requires: 339, 341 found: 340[M+H]+, 342 [M+2+H]+(1:1).
