A mixture of NaBr (197 mg, 1.9 mmol) and 1-(3-bromophenyl)-3-chlorobutan-2-one (100 mg, 0.38 mmol) in acetone (2 ml) was stirred at 70° C. for 3 h. The mixture was diluted with hexane and filtered to remove the solid. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was used for the next step without further purification. MS (ES+) C10H10Br2O requires: 303, 305 found: 304, 306 [M+H]+(1:1).
