Procedure

Thionyl chloride (2.21 g, 18.6 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 4-[5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl]-2-[(trifluoromethyl)oxy]benzonitrile (Intermediate 54, 3.50 g, 12.3 mmol) in toluene (50 mL) at room temperature, and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 4 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was diluted with DCM and washed with ice-cooled water, saturated aq NaHCO3 and brine solution, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude product. This was purified by column chromatography (60-120 mesh silica gel), eluting with 20% EtOAc/pet.ether to give the title compound as an off-white powder (2.85 g).
