To a solution of the imidate ester HCl 34 (650 mg, 2.63 mmol) in abs. ethanol was added ethylenediamine (0.53 ml, 7.89 mmol) at 0° C. and the mixture was stirred for 16 hrs at room temperature. Ether was added and the resulting precipitates were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo to give 490 mg (90% yield) of the desired cyclic amidine 35. 1H NMR (600 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 8.38 (d, 1H, J=3 Hz), 7.45 (dd, 1H, J=9, 2.4 Hz), 3.79 (s, 4H).
