A mixture of (S)-4-tert-butyl 3-methyl morpholine-3,4-dicarboxylate (0.93 g, 3.8 mmol) and 2-aminoethanol (5 g, 81.9 mmol) in methanol (2 mL) was stirred at 80° C. for 7 hours under N2. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo, diluted with EtOAc (100 mL) and acetic acid (5 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine (80 mL×6), dried over Na2SO4, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a white solid (0.8 g, 77%). The compound was characterized by the following spectroscopic data:
