Procedure

To a suspension of 10 g 3 Å MS in CH2Cl2 (150 mL) under N2 at rt was added butyraldehyde (4.96 mL, 55 mmol) followed by (S)-(−)-1-phenylethylamine (6.45 mL, 50 mmol). The mixture was stirred at rt for 1.5 h, filtered over celite and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give 9 g of the crude imine, which was used in the next step without further purification.
