2.22 g of ethyl 2-ethylthio-4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-1-{4-[2-(trityltetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in step (a) above] were added to 20 ml of a 25% v/v aqueous solution of acetic acid, and the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was crystallized by the addition of ethyl acetate, to give 1.22 g of the title compound as crystals, melting at 185°-188° C.
