A mixture of 8.98 g (0.0275M) of O-(o-nitrophenyl)-N-t-butoxycarbonyl-D-serine, 2.95 g (0.0551M) of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and 25 g (0.3856M) of zinc dust in 200 mL of methanol was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The solvent was evaporated and the residue dissolved in 200 mL of a 50/50 mixture of ethyl acetate and chloroform. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate evaporated to yield 8.15 g (100%) of product as an oil.
