Employing the same general procedure as for the preparation of 4-[(7,8-dihydro-8,8-dimethyl-5-ethylthionaphth-3-yl)ethynyl]benzoic acid (Compound 152), 100 mg (0.38 mmol) of ethyl 4-[(7,8-dihydro-8,8-dimethyl-5-benzylthionaphth-3-yl)ethynyl]benzoate (Compound 161) was converted into the title compound (white needles, recrystallized from a 50% solution of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate) using 2 ml of KOH (2N aqueous solution).
