Procedure

To a stirred solution of 2,5-dibromobenzoic acid (27.8 g, 100 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in THF/Et2O (450/50 mL) under nitrogen at −78° C. was added dropwise n-BuLi (2.5M) (88 mL, 2.20 equiv). After 2 h at −78° C., was added 1-benzylpiperidin-4-one (26.5 g, 140 mmol, 1.40 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred for 0.5 h at −78° C. and then warmed to room temperature, and stiffed overnight. The reaction was quenched by carefully adding 200 mL of water. The pH of the mixture was adjusted to 2-3 with hydrogen chloride (aq., 2 M). The aqueous phase was extracted with 3×500 mL of ethyl acetate and 3×500 mL of tetrahydrofuran. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 38.9 g (crude) of the title compound as a yellow solid.
