The immobilized Serratia marcescens prepared in the above (1) (60 g) was packed in a jacketed column (4 cm×8 cm) and incubated at 37° C. for 48 hours to activate the immobilized cells (aspartase activity: 1,582,000 μmole/hr). After activation, 1M ammonium fumarate solution containing 1mM magnesium chloride (pH 8.5, 1,000 ml) was passed through the column at 37° C. at the flow rate of 150 ml/hr. The effluent was adjusted to pH 2.8 to give L-aspartic acid (127 g).
