The starting material may be prepared as follows: 17.7 g of ethyl trimethylsilyl(diethoxymethyl)phosphonite is added dropwise to a stirred solution of 11.7 g of 4-chlorophenyl vinyl ketone under an atmosphere of nitrogen, at room temperature. The reaction mixture is stirred for a period of 1 hour, 25 ml of chloroform is added followed by 10 ml of water and this mixture is vigorously stirred for a period of 0.5 h. The organic layer is then separated, dried over magnesium sulphate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give ethyl 2-4-chlorobenzoyl-ethyl(diethoxymethyl)phosphinate as an oil, 31P=+45.5 ppm (CDCl3).
