To a stirred suspension of the compound (1d) (6.6 g, 35.2 mmol) in benzene (25 ml) and freshly distilled oxalyl chloride (5.6 g, 44 mmol) was added at ambient temperature dimethylformamide (2 drops). After 1 hour at ambient temperature, additional dimethylformamide (2 drops) was added and the reaction mixture stirred for additional hour. The solvent was removed in vacuo to give a yellow liquid. The liquid was distilled at reduced pressure to give the desired product as a colorless liquid bp 74°-75° C. at 0.3 mmHg.
