Benzyl 6-hydroxy-2(S)-phthalimidohexanoate (4.0 g) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 and treated with pyridinium chlorochromate (3.64 g). The reaction mixture was stirred under nitrogen for 4 hours and then diluted with 160 ml of ether. The mixture was filtered through a celite pad and concentrated to give an oil. This oil was passed through a short florisil column with ether as eluent. Concentration and drying in vacuo yielded pure benzyl 5-formyl-2(S)-phthalimidopentanoate (3.16 g); [α]D25° =-18.6° (CH2Cl2, c=4.1); I.R. (neat): 2730 cm-1.
