Procedure
1.0 g (0.003 mol) of 2-carboxy-4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-methylsulfonylphenol prepared in Example 3 is dissolved in 6 ml of methanol, and heated under reflux with 0.1 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid for 2 days. The mixture is poured onto ice-water, and this is extracted with ethyl acetate, the solvent is removed in vacuo and the residue is subjected to chromatography on silica gel using ethyl acetate/toluene 4:1 as the eluting agent.
