Procedure
A mixture of 4-hydroxyquinoline (2.9 g.), sodium methanesulphinate (8.16 g.), 40% aqueous formaldehyde (4.5 ml.) and water (70 ml.) was stirred at 95°-100° for 24 hours. More formaldehyde solution (5 ml.) was added and the mixture stirred at 95°-100° for a further 24 hours. The mixture was cooled and filtered to give the novel 4-hydroxy-3-methylsulphonylmethylquinoline, m.p. 280°-282° (from industrial methylated spirit:water).
