A mixture of methyl 3-[4-(2-[2,2,2-trifluoroethyl]guanidino)-1,2,3-triazol-2-yl]benzoate (0.2 g.) and ethanolamine (5 ml.) was heated at 80° overnight. The mixure was evaporated and the thick oily residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel using EtOAc and isopropanol (6:1 v/v) as eluant. The product was recrystallised from isopropanol to give N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-[4-(2-[2,2,2-trifluoroethyl]guanidino)-1,2,3-triazol-2-yl]benzamide, m.p. 171°-173°.
