Procedure
2-(1-Imidazolylmethyl)phenoxyacetic acid ethyl ester (1 g) was heated on a steam bath for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium hydroxide (0.5 g) in water (10 ml) and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 18 hours. The solution was then evaporated to small volume and acidified to pH 5 with acetic acid. The solid was collected by filtration and crystallised from water to give 2-(1-imidazolylmethyl)phenoxyacetic acid (0.26 g), m.p. 213°-214° C. Found: C, 51.83, H, 5.24, N, 12.34. C12H12N2O3 requires: C, 62.05, H, 5.21, N, 12.06%.
