Procedure

Jones reagent was added dropwise to a stirred solution of the product of Preparation 3 (0.3 g) in acetone (20 ml) until the reagent colour was not discharged. Water (150 ml) was added and the precipitate obtained was collected by filtration, washed with water, dried and crystallised from ethyl acetate/petrol to give the title compound (0.19 g), m.p. 208°-209° C., [α]D +41°.
