1 g of 1-(5-chloro-2-pyridyl)-2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethane-1-ol is dissolved in 2 ml of toluene, 6 ml of thionyl chloride are added and the reaction mixture is stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature. The solvent and the thionyl chloride in excess are distilled off, the residue is dissolved in 2N NaOH, extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to yield the compound as a colourless oil.
