A mixture of 5-(4-cyanophenyl)-3-hydroxymethyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (4.08 g), N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (20.92 g) and o-phosphoric acid (9.94 g) in dimethyl sulfoxide (80 ml) was stirred at ambient temperature. After 1 hour, the mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from ether to give 5-(4-cyanophenyl)-3-formyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (2.17 g).
