[4-(1H-benzimidazol-5-yloxy)phenyl]methanol (1.26 g) was dissolved in 70 ml of ethanol and 70 ml of chloroform and heated with MnO2 (4.56 g, 52.5 mmol) in a 75 degrees Centigrade oil bath for 14 hrs. An additional 1 g of MNO2 was added and the reaction continued heating for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through celite and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 1.26 g of 4-(1H-benzimidazol-5-yloxy)benzaldehyde.
