Procedure
Ethyl 5-formyl-8-methoxy-3,4-dihydro[1]benzofuro[2,3-c]pyridine-2(1H)-carboxylate (from step 6) (0.310 g, 1.02 mmol) was taken in acetone water mixture. To this was added sulphamic acid (0.148 g, 1.53 mmol) and sodium chlorite (0.157 g, 1.73 mmol) and stirred for half an hour. After removing acetone under diminished pressure and dilution with water, it yielded 2-(ethoxycarbonyl)-8-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1]benzofuro[2,3-c]pyridine-5-carboxylic acid (41%) which was filtered out, washed with water and dried.
