To a stirred suspension of (s)-2′-oxo-1′,2′,6,8-tetrahydrospiro[cyclopenta[g]quinoline-7,3′-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine]-2-carbaldehyde (80 mg, 0.25 mmol, described in Intermediate 10) in a mixture of MeOH (5 mL) and DMSO (1 mL) was added sodium borohydride (19 mg, 0.51 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 1 h, then the MeOH was removed in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (20 mL) and CH2Cl2 (20 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted further with CH2Cl2 (2×20 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound in sufficient purity for use in the next step. MS: m/z=318 (M+1).
