A mixture of (±)-ethyl (3-methyl-4-nitro-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-3-yl)acetate (1.08 g, 3.88 mmol, described in Intermediate 17) and Lawesson's reagent (942 mg, 2.33 mmol) was heated at reflux in xylenes (30 mL) for 90 min. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of CH2Cl2:EtOAc—100:0 to 90:10, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=295 (M+1).
