Procedure
3-(1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyridin-4-yl)benzamidine dihydrochloride (1.0 g, 5.0 mmol) is dissolved in methanol (50 ml) treated with 5% Pd on carbon and stirred overnight under an atmosphere of hydrogen gas. The reaction mixture is filtered; the filtrate is concentrated to give 3-piperidin-4ylbenzamidine dihydrochloride as a white foam (1.30 g, 4.7 mmol). 1H NMR (DMSO) δ 9.40 (s, 2H), 9.2 (br, 4H), 7.67 (br, 2H), 7.56 (br, 2H), 3.4 (br, 2H), 3.0 (m, 3H), 2.7 (br, 4H). Ion spray MS M++1: 204.
