3β-Carbomethoxyandrost-5-ene-7,17-dione (44) (0.3 g, 0.8 mmol) in 5 mL dichloromethane and 10 mL methanol was treated with cerium (III) chloride heptahydrate (0.3 g, 0.8 mmol). To this cold solution, finely powdered sodium borohydride (0.09 g, 2.4 mmol) was added slowly. After 15 minutes the solvent was evaporated to complete dryness, the solid crude was taken up in dichloromethane, stirred for 30 minutes and filtered on a small bed of celite. The organic layer was washed once with water, dried and the solvent was removed. The product was crystallized from acetone-petroleum ether to afford 0.22 g (73%) of 3β-carboethoxyandrost-5-ene-7β,17β-diol (50) as a white solid, m.p. 170-71° C.
