N-tert-Butyloxycarbonylpiperidone (6.0 g, 29.8 mmol) was added to a solution of (S)-phenylalaninamide (4.9 g, 29.8 mmol) in dry EtOH (20 ml) and the mixture was heated for 2.5 h under reflux. The solvent was distilled off and the tert-butyl 3-(S)-benzyl-2-oxo-1,4,8-triazaspiro[4,5]decane-8-carboxylate (10.8 g) was used without further workup.
