Reaction Steps
A reaction mixture of 4,5-diamino-2-methylbenzonitrile (20 mg) and formic acid (6 ml) was refluxed for 3 hours. The reaction solution was cooled and concentrated. To the residue was added a 1M aqueous NaOH solution, and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and then filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated to obtain 5-methyl-1H-benzimidazole-6-carbonitrile as colorless powders.
