3-Cyanophenol (187 mg, 1.06 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (1 mL) and cesium carbonate (360 mg, 1.1 mmol) was added followed by a solution of 2-chloro-3-nitropyridine (158 mg, 1.0 mmol) in DMF (1 mL). The reaction mixture was heated with shaking at 80° C. for 18 h. The mixture was concentrated. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate (4 mL) and washed with water (0.6 mL), saturated NaHCO3 (0.5 mL) and water (2×0.5 mL). The organic phase was concentrated and the resulted mixture containing mainly 106a was used in the next step without further purification.
