Procedure
A solution of 116 g (0.35 mol) of 2-(2-bromo-4-tert-butylbenzyl)butanoyl chloride in 150 ml of dry dichloromethane was added dropwise to a suspension of 56.2 g (0.42 mol) of powdered AlCl3 in 500 ml of dry dichloromethane for 1.5 hours at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and then poured on 500 cm3 of ice. The organic layer was separated, and the aqueous layer was extracted by 3×100 ml of dichloromethane. The combined organic extract was washed by saturated aqueous NaHCO3, dried over K2CO3, and evaporated to dryness. Fractional rectification of the residue gave 92.2 g (89%) of the title product, b.p. 142° C.-147° C./1 mm Hg. Anal. calc. for C15H19BrO: C, 61.03; H, 6.49.
