Procedure
Sodium hydroxide, 50% aqueous solution (60.4 mL, 1.58 mol) was added to a mixture of 4-bromobenzeneacetonitrile (30 g, 0.2 mol), benzyltriethylammonium chloride (2.8 g, 0.012 mol), and 1-bromo-2-chloroethane (26.5 mL, 0.320 mol) at 50° C. for 5 hours. 1,2-ethanediol (306.0 mL, 5.491 mol) was added to the mixture and the resulting mixture was heated at 100° C. overnight. The mixture was poured into ice-water (60 mL) and was extracted with ethyl ether (2×150 mL). The aqueous phase was acidified (pH=2) with 1N HCl and was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic phase was washed with brine (100 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was the desired product (36.6 g) which was directly used in next step without further purification. 1H NMR confirmed the structure of the product.
