A mixture of 1-(3-methyl-4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-butane-1,3-dione (2.17 g, 7.28 mmol) and commercially available 3-aminopyrazole (0.73 g, 8.78 mmol) in acetic acid (15 ml) was refluxed for 4 h and evaporated. The crude product was further purified by crystallization (ethyl acetate/heptane) to yield 5-(3-methyl-4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-7-trifluoromethyl-pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (2.14 g, 85%) as a yellow solid. MS (EI) 345.1 [(M)+]; mp 87° C.
