A solution of sodium ethoxide (5.37 mmol) in EtOH (3.3 mL) is added to a solution of 5-methyl-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (5.37 mmol) in EtOH (7.0 mL). Bromoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal (5.37 mmol) is added and the mixture is stirred at reflux for 12 h. After cooling to RT the mixture is filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give the desired product which is used without further purification. LC-MS: tR=0.70 min; [M+H]+=303.4.
