A suspension of ethyl 1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-8-methoxy-5-nitro-4-oxo-2-phenylquinoline-3-carboxylate (2.60 g, 5.82 mmol) and manganese dioxide (39.0 g, 449 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (60 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The catalyst was removed by filtration over Celite and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (Hexane:EtOAc 5:1→1:1) to yield ethyl 1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-5-nitro-4-oxo-2-phenylquinoline-3-carboxylate (1.05 g, 41%) as a colorless solid.
