To a mixture of 4-(4-(thiazol-2-yl)phenyl)morpholine (2.00 g, 8.13 mmol) and concentrated sulfuric acid (25 mL) was added concentrated nitric acid (0.60 mL) at −10° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 4.5 h, then poured into ice water, and extracted with CH2Cl2 (60 mL×3). The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a yellow solid (0.70 g, 30%).
