Procedure

To a suspension of 5-amino-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylate (458 mg, 1.21 mmol) in a mixture of AcOH (1.8 mL) and water (1.5 mL), was added H2SO4 (0.3 mL), the whole mixture was heated under reflux for 1 h. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and the resulting precipitates were collected by filtration. The filtered precipitates were suspended in water, filtered, and dried in vacuo to give 5-amino-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid (401 mg, 95%) as a pale yellow powder.
