Procedure

To a solution of 4-methyl-naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid cyclohexylamide 40 (3.0 g, 10 mmol) in CCl4 (100 mL) was added NBS (2.1 g, 12.0 mmol) and benzoyl peroxide (240 mg, 1.0 mmol), The reaction mixture was heated at reflux overnight. The solid was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The title compound was a yellow residue (2.5 g, solidified on standing) which was used directly in the next step without further purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.70 (m, 1H), 8.25 (m, 2H), 7.70 (m, 2H), 7.60 (d, 1H), 4.94 (s, 2H), 4.58 (m, 1H); 3.15 (m, 1H), 1.55 (m, 5H), 1.05 (m, 5H); LC/MS m/z 356 (M+H)+ 382.
