Reaction Steps

6-Chlorodifluoromethyl-2-hydroxynicotinamide (48.5 g) was heated in dilute sulphuric acid (36 ml in 250 ml water) for 12 hours. The reaction was concentrated to about half the volume and cooled in ice. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and air dried to give 6-chlorodifluoromethyl-2-hydroxynicotinic acid (48.1 g, 98% yield) as a pale brown solid mp.131-3° C.; 1H NMR (270 MHz): δ 7.36(1H,d), 8.33(1H,d) ppm.
