Potassium tert-butoxide (33 g) was added portionwise at room temperature to a solution of interm. (5-d) (36.4 g) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (350 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was hydrolized and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4), filtered off and evaporated till dryness. The product was used without further purification, yielding 43 g of 6-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]-4-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2(1H)-quinolinone (interm. 5-e).
