A solution of 125 mg (3.8 mmol) of 1-((1,1′-biphenyl)-3-ylmethyl)-2-methyl-4-methoxy-1H-indole is O-demethylated by treating it with 15 mL of 1M BBr3/CH2Cl2. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 5 hours and concentrated at reduced pressure. The crude product is chromatographed on silica gel and is eluted with 20% EtOAc/hexane to give 1030 mg (87% yield) of 1-((1,1′-biphenyl)-3-ylmethyl)-2-methyl-4-hydroxy-1H-indole.
